Not particularly for pricing issues, but precious metals make it pretty much impossible to get a watch to feel “sporty” whatsoever, let alone such a complicated watch such as the 5960. The outcome is the natural progression of what the new meant with their desire to capture a younger market, and in my opinion it’s an aesthetic improvement and refinement. The original 5960, published in 2006 was the first in-house chronograph made by Patek so it’s not surprising that the manufacturer might need to be certain they get these steel iterations just right in that it pleases collectors, fans, and of course, aspirational watch lovers. The opaline/silver dial with red and black touches was a success but I do not think I’m alone in picking the newer black dial watch. Sporty, modern, and carrying a definitely impressive movement, Patek has successfully created a lust worthy piece here for those of us who respect heritage without being burdened by the weight of dusty and unchanging style. The 40.5mm wide and 13.5mm thick polished stainless steel case houses the profound ebony black opaline dial that is fortunately legible as well as attractive. The applied white gold hour markers, red minutes and chronograph hands, and white facets of the monocounter at 6 o’clock keep the dial out of being overpowering considering how much is going on with the Patek Philippe Watches Video Replica 5960/1A.
Introduced three years ago as the entry-level sports chronograph from Patek Philippe, the ref. 5960/1A was originally in white with black accents. Now the colour scheme – the ref. 5960/1A-010 – has been inverted for Baselworld 2017.
Hardly earth shattering news but it’s from Geneva’s best so some hearts will beat faster nonetheless.
The new dial is “ebony black opaline”, while the rest of the watch remains the same. A 40.5mm steel case with a matching steel bracelet, and the automatic calibre CH 28-520 IRM QA 24H inside.
Price and availability
Pricing has yet to be announced, but expect it to cost similar to the US$51,000 of the existing ref. 5960/1A in silver.
